Wedding photographer Dunedin

Relaxed wedding photography from people who know Dunedin weddings.

We are Craig & Sarah O'Neill of O'Neill Photographics, a Dunedin-based husband and wife wedding photography team. Craig photographed his first wedding in 2001, and since has photographed hundreds of weddings throughout Dunedin, Otago, Queenstown, Wanaka and across New Zealand. Here you'll find our story, hints and tips from a Dunedin wedding photographer, local venue knowledge, real wedding stories and practical advice for planning a wedding in this part of the country.

Local Knowledge Makes a Difference

Dunedin is a beautiful place to get married, but it also has its own personality. The weather can change quickly, the wind can arrive at exactly the wrong moment, and the best photo locations often depend on the light, timing and season.

A local Dunedin wedding photographer brings more than a camera. We know which beaches work in different wind directions, which gardens give shelter, which venues have great wet-weather options, and how to keep the day calm when the weather doesn't behave.

When Experience Matters

When Sarah & Stafford's wedding transport broke down between the church and their reception venue, our planned 90 minutes of photography suddenly became barely 30. For many couples that could have been stressful, but this is where working with a local Dunedin wedding photographer really makes a difference.

Because we knew the venue so well, we already had a clear plan for the best photo locations, the quickest routes between them, and how the light would be working at that time of day. Years of experience photographing weddings at Dunedin wedding venues meant we could adapt immediately and still create a beautiful collection of portraits without making the couple feel rushed.

“We lost an hour of photography time, but you'd never know it from the final photographs.”

One of the advantages of choosing a wedding photographer in Dunedin is having someone who understands the local venues, weather and conditions. Whether it's unexpected delays, changing light, strong Otago winds or a last-minute change of plans, experience matters.

As a Dunedin wedding photographer and Otago wedding photographer with more than 20 years of experience, I've learned that things don't always go to plan on a wedding day — but with the right local knowledge, they usually work out just fine.

Sarah and Stafford still received a stunning collection of Dunedin wedding photographs, and most people would never know we had lost an hour of portrait time along the way.

Do you photograph at Grandview Gardens, Glenfalloch Gardens and Larnach Castle?

Yes. We have photographed weddings at many Dunedin and Otago venues including Grandview Gardens, Glenfalloch Gardens and Larnach Castle.
